How do I clear blocked nozzles on my printer?

Posted: 20 Dec 2018

  Paper Queries

If you have blocked nozzles which aren’t clearing by doing head cleans, we would suggest to try soaking under the head of the printer or using Fotospeed blockbuster to help break down any built up ink.

The method of using the blockbuster differs depending on which printer you are using;

For Epson 1400/1500, R2880, R2400 - As the cartridges are situated directly above the head of the printer you can use the blockbuster directly down the nozzles in the cartridge slots. Draw 1-2 ml of blockbuster into the tubed syringe included in the kit, and attach the end of the tubing to the nozzle sticking out which would normally connect with the inkflow cartridge. Then, slowly push down until all of the blockbuster solution has travelled through the tubing and down the nozzle.
We then suggest to place the cartridge back into the printer and leave for 10-15 minutes.
Once you have done this, run a head clean and then another nozzle check.

NB: The above method is not suggested to use with Epson 3880 or 3800, please see below

If there are still some nozzles blocked then we suggest to soak on the underside of the print head. To access the underside of the print head, turn the printer on, and when the head of the printer move briefly to the left hand side, pull the power lead from the back. This will allow you to move the print head manually left to right.
On the far right hand side (where the head sits when stationary) there is a small metal square called the ink cap assembly.
Soak a piece of j-cloth in blockbuster (approx. 2”x 2” and 4 layers thick) and place this on top of the ink cap assembly. Then slide the print head back on top of the j-cloth and leave to soak for half an hour.
Come back and check the j-cloth. If it is soaked in ink, I would suggest to get a clean piece of j-cloth and repeat this process.
Once the j-cloth starts to come through with little to no ink, then plug the printer back in and run through another nozzle check.
If the results seem to be improving, but some of the nozzle check is still missing, this process can be repeated, and the j-cloth can be left overnight to soak under the print head.

For Epson R3000 or SC-P800 - When using Fotospeed blockbuster on the R3000 or SC-P600, we advise not to insert it directly down the nozzles in cartridge slots. This is because there is a lot of internal tubing in these printers, so putting blockbuster directly down these nozzles can dilute the ink and be difficult to completely flush out.
We instead suggest to use the blockbuster to soak under the head of the printer.

If this doesn't work the next stage is to run an ‘ink charge’.

This is one long continuous clean with the printer and can be run by purchasing and downloading a piece of software from 2manuals.com. Please see the links below:

P600

R3000

This can only be run on the Epson R3000 or Epson SC-P600 and you would need a new chip set to run this which can be purchased through us for £10 including P&P.
